Rome dans les années 1970, la famille Borghetti vient de s’installer dans un des nombreux nouveaux complexes résidentiels construits dans la capitale italienne. Malgré ce récent emménagement, au dernier étage d’un nouvel appartement avec vue sur toute la ville, Clara et Felice ne sont plus amoureux, mais n’arrivent pas à se quitter. Clara trouve un refuge à sa solitude en se concentrant dans la relation spéciale qu’elle a avec ses trois enfants. L’aînée, Adriana, encore inconnue dans ce nouveau quartier, se présente délibérément comme un garçon aux enfants, ce qui va pousser le lien qui unit encore la famille vers un point de rupture.

Rome in the 1970s, the Borghetti family has just moved into one of the many new residential complexes built in the Italian capital. Despite this recent move, on the top floor of a new apartment with a view of the whole city, Clara and Felice are no longer in love, but cannot leave each other. Clara finds refuge from her loneliness by focusing on the special relationship she has with her three children. The eldest, Adriana, still unknown in this new neighborhood, deliberately presents herself as a boy to the children, which will push the bond that still unites the family to a breaking point.
